Tunisia’s top places to visit are Carthage, Sidi Bou Said, the Medina of Tunis, Kairouan, and the Sahara gateway towns of Tozeur and Douz. International arrivals reached 10.25 million in 2024, making Tunisia Africa’s third most-visited country behind Morocco and Egypt.
- Carthage — Ancient Phoenician and Roman ruins on the Gulf of Tunis, just outside the capital; UNESCO-listed since 1979.
- Sidi Bou Said — A cliff-top village of blue-and-white houses overlooking the Mediterranean, a short taxi ride from Carthage.
- Medina of Tunis — A UNESCO-listed old city (1979) of souks and the Zitouna Mosque, still home to working copper and ceramic artisans.
- Kairouan — The Great Mosque anchors this UNESCO-listed medina (1988), one of Islam’s founding religious centers in North Africa.
- Tozeur & Douz — Desert gateway towns for the Sahara’s dunes and mountain oases, reached by a short flight or long drive south from Tunis.
Planning note: Carthage, Sidi Bou Said, and the Tunis Medina work as one day-trip cluster from the capital; Kairouan and the Sahara towns are a separate multi-day leg south.
